Beijing, China's capital, has a Muslim population of approximately 300,000 — about 1.5% of the city's 21 million residents. China's Muslim population is estimated at 20–25 million, predominantly the Hui people — a Chinese ethnic group that has practised Islam for over a millennium, descendants of Arab, Persian, and Central Asian traders who settled along the Silk Road. Beijing's Hui Muslim community has been present in the city since at least the Tang Dynasty (7th century), making it one of the oldest continuously practising Muslim communities in East Asia.

China's prayer times are administered by the China Islamic Association (CIA) using the Muslim World League method as a base, adapted for Chinese latitudes. At 39.9°N, Beijing's prayer schedule varies considerably — Fajr ranges from approximately 3:15 AM in June to 6:25 AM in December, and Isha from 9:45 PM (summer) to 5:25 PM (winter). The CIA, established in 1953, is the official government-sanctioned body overseeing Islamic affairs in China, responsible for training imams, publishing Islamic materials, and organising the Hajj quota for Chinese Muslims.

The Niujie Mosque (Ox Street Mosque) in the Xuanwu district, originally built in 996 CE during the Liao dynasty, is the oldest and largest mosque in Beijing, blending Chinese architectural style with Islamic calligraphy and spatial principles — its distinctive Chinese-pagoda-style prayer hall is a testament to the sinicisation of Islamic architecture over a millennium. The surrounding Niujie neighbourhood remains a Hui Muslim enclave with halal restaurants, Islamic bookshops, and a Muslim market. The Dongsi Mosque and Huashi Mosque also serve Beijing's Muslim community. Eid prayers at Beijing's historic mosques are attended by thousands and are occasions of great cultural as well as spiritual significance.
