Is Astrology Haram?

Is reading horoscopes or believing in astrology permissible in Islam?

Islamic Ruling

Reading horoscopes and believing in astrology is haram in Islam.

Why it is prohibited:
1. Claiming knowledge of the unseen (ghayb): Only Allah knows the future. Believing stars or zodiac signs can determine one's fate or character is shirk (associating partners with Allah in His exclusive attributes).
2. The Prophet's explicit prohibition: The Prophet ﷺ prohibited learning astrology.

Casual reading without belief: Many scholars say even reading a horoscope for entertainment without believing it affects one's prayer for 40 days, as the hadith warns.

Astronomy vs astrology: The science of astronomy (studying stars, planets, celestial movements for navigation, prayer time calculation, calendar) is permissible and encouraged in Islam. Only the *divinatory* and *predictive* use is prohibited.

Quranic Evidence

  • Quran 6:50

Say: I do not tell you that I have the treasures of Allah or that I know the unseen.

Hadith Evidence

  • Sunan Abu Dawud 3905

"The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or soothsayer and believes what they say has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.""

  • Sunan Abu Dawud 3907

"The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever consults an astrologer, his prayer will not be accepted for 40 days.""
